The Republic of Turkey is located on both the European continent and the Asian continent, with the biggest portion being on the Asian continent.

Istanbul, which is on the European side, and Asia Minor united, after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and end of World War I and has become county known as Turkey. Due to the diverse landscape from coastal plains, valleys, mountains and plateaus causes the lifestyle, production and climate to be just as diverse.

There are typically five regions that make up Turkey. Both the Central Anatolian and Eastern Anatolian regions are known for cold and long winters with moderately warm summers. The other three regions Mediterranean, Aegean, and Marmara (Istanbul) are coastal regions with mild winters and hot summers. Because of the diverse geographical regions Turkey is one of the few nations that is totally self-sustaining, producing all their own food products.

Turkey’s geography can be described, on the basis of their food specialties. The coastal region is known for their shellfish, while the mountains are known for their raisins and grapes. The plateaus are covered with olive, fig and pistachio trees. The virgin olive oils of Turkey rank among the best. Their meals include a special course named, the olive oil course. The meat sis kebabs and pilaf is said to have originated in Turkey. Due to the Islamic religion people sit on the floor when eating while pork is prohibited.

Even though many changes have taken in the Muslim dominated Turkey they hold its heritage through out. Until 1991 Turkish is the official language not giving way to other languages. A typical Muslim house in Turkey has two parts for men as well as women. A selamlik or public room is meant for men while the harem or private rooms with courtyard are intended to women where they entertained their visitors.

The customs and practices of Turkey make it a very friendly country. The concept of sharing is so deep rooted that they share their food and beverages with every one around before having them. They do not even smoke without offering it to others. Eating or smoking without sharing is a sign of disrespect. Bayram, an important holiday of theirs, is based on this concept of sharing. On this occasion they give money to children and visit their neighbors. Turkey is a place that can satisfy all types of visitors. They can enjoy the culture, history and the ancient ruins of this great country.
